E at Four Years Old

20120504-093235.jpgOne of our new favorite snacks is roasted seaweed.  E likes it in small quantities.

E found a friend in the neighborhood that is his age, which has been so much fun!

Anything and everything is a gun these days.

He’s always showing me his amazing tricks.

He has recently gotten into doing mazes.

He’s always been a great climber and last month he discovered that he could scale the pantry shelves.

He still loves making music, even if it comes from drumming pots and pans.

Memorable Moments from April:

One day last month E was talking about how his preschool teacher will miss him when he goes to college.

E went to Pump It Up with a friend last month and kept calling it Pump a Dump.

When he saw the sprinkles on his cupcakes he said, “whoa those are really beautiful!”

E laid down to take a nap with me one afternoon and started tickling my face. (so sweet)

E had diarrhea one day and came running upstairs yelling, “Mom! I had slippery poops!”

For the past few months E has referred to him and L as our little Chicks, Paul is rooster and I am hen.

When reading the scriptures one night we were talking about Lehi’s family in the storm at sea.  When I was talking about the awful storm coming because Laman and Lemuel were being bad E said in a concerned voice, “but there were prophets in that ship.”

E saw the big box that our lawn mower was delivered in and said, “What my heak!”

L at 18 Months

L had her 18 month check up last week.

She got two shots and didn’t even cry for the first one.

(Bless those thighs!)

Stats:

28.4 lbs. (92-93%)

34.1 in. (97%)

20120504-093042.jpg

L has traded a lot of her signs in for “words” and has started using a few phrases.

She says “please” (peees) and “thank you” (na-na) often without being reminded.

If I give her something special she will stop and say “thank you” until she makes eye contact with me to make sure I heard her.

(It melts my heart!)

If she (or anyone else) burps she says, “excuse me” (me-me).

When she wants more to eat she holds up her bowl and says, “mo, mo” like a little orphan child.

She throws her hands straight up into the air and with a huge smile says “Yay!” when she’s excited about something.

While out shopping she says “Hi!” to almost everyone she sees.

At the end (or sometimes in the middle) of a prayer she gives an enthusiastic “Amen.”

I never hoped to hear someone say the words “poo poo” again, until I heard them come out of L’s mouth. (adorable!)

She’ll wave her finger at you and in a deep firm voice say, “No, No!”

She also says: Mama, Mom, Da-da, bubu, Water (wawa), Baby (bee bee), Blanky (bee bee), potty, ball, play, Night Night (nye nye), Bye Bye, Go, Car, Stop, Grandma, bird, weee, mine & cracker.

April Wrap Up

A few things I never blogged about last month…

20120504-093330.jpgWe thoroughly enjoyed general conference weekend.

20120504-093339.jpg

The weather in April was really nice!

We went to our ward pinewood derby and it was fun watching E sit up front with the “big kids.”

The kids used their McDonald’s gift cards from grandma S.

(this was L’s first time in a play place)

I made my first homemade pizza that looked like a normal pizza!

(it was stuffed crust:)

Ten on Tuesday (fashion advice needed)

(source)

1. I figured out how to disable the automatic posts on Facebook. I will continue to link up posts on Facebook at least once a week, but if you click on the link I post it will only take you to that post. If I have posted other posts recently you will not be able to see them unless you click on “Home” in the top menu bar. I have also added a “Recent Posts” widget in the right sidebar, so you can just glance over there to see if there are any posts you have missed. Does that make sense? (I’m going to give my blog a makeover soon and hopefully that list will end up looking a little more aesthetically pleasing.)

2. On to the fashion advice… I went shopping on Saturday (all by myself!) and may have gotten a little carried away. I bought a pair of orange capris similar to the pants pictured above, just a little shorter in length. While I do think these pants are super cute I am torn as to whether or not I should keep them. My question is, are colored pants here to stay for a while? I’m trying to build a timeless wardrobe with lots of great staples. I don’t think these really fit the bill, BUT it is good to throw in a few fun trendy pieces here and there right? (I wish I knew how to add a poll to this blog.)

3. Speaking of fashion advice… have you ever read asktheduplex.blogspot.com? (These girls (and the duplex:) were in my ward at BYU.) I love the concept behind their blog and think they’ve done such a great job with it!

4. Paul got a lawnmower for his birthday last week. Not his most favorite present ever, but we needed one. I am really excited about it because it’s a manual push mower. (we do have a tiny yard) I don’t know why it makes me so happy, but it does! I am turning into a little bit of a green freak. I’m not sure why or when it started, but I’ve really been conscious of my carbon footprint lately. I love using a Shark steam mop and bag less vacuum when cleaning. Last month I made homemade bathroom cleaner and this week I have been thinking a lot about going paperless in the kitchen. (not sure if we’re ready for that one.) I added “start using reusable grocery bags” to my 112 in 2012 list and I’m still looking forward to making homemade laundry detergent once we use up the detergent we’ve got. We are not experts by any means, (I don’t know if I will every be able to give up Clorox disinfectant wipes!) but it’s a start.

5. I’m starting to think about some upcoming trips with my kids and can’t help but get a little nervous. I’ve seen some ideas for traveling with kids on Pinterest, but a lot of them don’t seem very practical to me. (I’m thinking of flying specifically.) So, does anyone have any simple ideas they would like to share? I could use all the help I can get!

6. I have two new favorite iphone apps, both have to do with photography. The first one is VSCO CAM. It is, by far, the best iphone camera app I have used. I also love the simple editing capabilities that are not just a bunch of filters! The other app I enjoy is PicFrame. This app makes it super easy to put together collages. Between these two apps and the WordPress app it is pretty easy for me to compose a blog post straight from my phone.

7. Have you heard of Bob Books? We are loving Bob books at our house right now and I just discovered that Costco sells them! Not only do they sell them, but you can get twice the books for half the price at Costco. I went last week and picked up four of the five sets. (for some reason they do not have collection three right now! Let me know if you happen to see it!) They sell these with their other educational supplies that they get in at the end of April. Once they’re gone, they’re gone until next year. (I really want to find collection 3!!!) I just noticed on their website that there are two Bob Book apps. Maybe those would be good to purchase for my upcoming trip?

8. So, remember how I wanted to get L another pair of Salt Water sandals? (Wasn’t she so cute in her sandals last summer?!) Well, I decided to check the two children’s consignment stores that are close by before ordering a pair online. Guess what! I found a pair of Salt Waters at both stores! Guess what else, one was a size four and one was a size six. Guess what size L is… a five! So guess what I did. I bought both pairs! She can squeeze into the size four, but the sixes are way too big. I’m hoping they’ll fit her just right next summer, but I think there’s a good chance she’ll be too big for them. Paul thinks I’m a little crazy when it comes to finding a good deal and I’d have to agree. At least our next girl (We better get another girl!) will be all set when it comes to Salt Water sandals. I’m still keeping an eye out for a size five, but in the mean time I picked up a pair of sandals on clearance at Marshall’s on Saturday.

9. This month I started doing a cash-only budget. (Dave Ramsey anyone?) Paul refuses to use just cash because of the inconvenience, but that’s okay because he hardly ever spends money. I should clarify though, I am not using cash for everything. It’s basically just for food, household stuff and clothes. (You know, pretty much anything you would find at Target) I have been slacking on our “debt free in three” goal so I figured this might be a good way to tighten up the shoe strings and keep my eye on the prize.

10. I have been working on a slideshow for my grandpa’s 90th birthday party over the past few weeks. It has been so fun to look through all of the pictures that are going to be included in it. It has reminded me why I love photography so much. I am so grateful that some of the moments in his life were captured, not very many, but some. I look at every detail in each picture. I am so intrigued by what their kitchen looked like, what my grandma wore, the style of curtains they had, the cars they drove, the vacations they took etc. Every picture teaches me something new about my grandparents. Weren’t they cute?!

20120507-125516.jpg

L officially went to the nursery at church for the first time.

20120507-125524.jpg

L experienced her first (and last for a while:) ponytail.

20120507-125530.jpg

E read a take-home book from school to L as she brushed her teeth.

20120507-125537.jpg

E left me some love notes at my desk.

20120507-125543.jpg

L was crying at nap time so E came out and sang to her under the door.

20120507-125552.jpg

L went to the Dr. for her 18 month check up.

(sorry about the horrible coloring in this photo!)

20120507-125604.jpg

It was warm enough to wear spring clothes.

20120507-125614.jpg

L’s little purple sunglasses broke, so I picked these ones up for her.

(Unfortunately every time I look at her in them I’m reminded of Elton John!)

20120507-125623.jpg

I took E to the walk-in clinic because he’s had a bad cold.

They made him wear a mask in the waiting room because of his cough and he was not happy about it!

20120507-125631.jpg

Paul had a business dinner on Saturday night so the kids and I went on a date to the mall.

Counting My Blessings (a dozen to be exact)

Yesterday started out rough. After a stressful morning at the walk-in clinic and then a 2 hour fiasco with prescriptions… I was done! I even posted a Whiny status update on Facebook complaining about the turn of events I had experienced.  After things had settled down I was lying down for a nap and realized how ungrateful I was being and deleted my Facebook post.

I was just able to drive (1) to a clinic (2) that was less than ten minutes (3) away.  My son received the care (4) that he needed and because we have health insurance (5) through my husband’s job (6) that visit only cost $20.  I was then able to drive five minutes (7) to a pharmacy (8) where I picked up the medications (9) prescribed for $16.85.  Paying $36.85 for these things was not a financial concern (10).  In fact, I was also able to purchase a treat (11) for each of my children (Yes, I bribe my children when I take them to the Dr.) and ended up taking them out to lunch (12).

As the day came to a close I didn’t want it to end.  I wanted time to stop in its tracks & wait a while.  After dinner I helped Paul rub our sick little boy down with vapor rub, including his feet which we covered with socks.  He said sweet sincere “thank you’s” and “I love you’s” to each of us as we tucked him into bed and then fell right to sleep as I left the room.

Next, I walked out to the playroom to find my little girl playing catch with her dad.  I sat on the floor with the two of them and spent the next 30 minutes doing nothing but enjoying their company and marveling at the ways L has grown.  How had I noticed how quick and coordinated she had become over the past couple of months?  “When was the last time we sat and played with just L like this?”  I thought to myself.  I didn’t have an answer, but that was okay.  At that moment I wasn’t worrying about the past or the future.  It was one of those rare times when I was living in the present, observing and experiencing every beautiful detail… and counting my blessings.

A New Toy

We all know how much L loves books.I was so excited when I found this book at a thrift store last week.

(With all of the pieces!)I try to save things like this for gifts on holidays, but I couldn’t resist giving this one to her right away. They grow out of toys so fast at this age.  I wanted her to get a lot of good use out of it.Plus, I thought it might be a good addition to our church bag.

(As long as we can keep the pieces somewhat contained.)

L’s very good at taking the pieces out.Thankfully big brother enjoys helping her put them back in.

Let’s Go Fishing!

When these game pieces were thrown across the room out of frustration (wasn’t me) we opted for a different game.

Fishing was a much better fit on this particular day.E even requested that I take pictures once the game had started.

Then he counted all of his catches and proceeded to rub in the fact that he won by such a large margin. But don’t worry, his big heart got the best of him and he decided to put the pink ones back in for me to catch.

He knows that pink is mama’s favorite color.

Tulip Town

On Saturday we decided to head up to the Tulip Festival.

The kids and I loved it!

Paul thought it was okay.I love the rainbow view of all of the tulips.

Tulips have become one of my favorite flowers in the past year!

(Rememberthe tulips in Nauvoo last year?  I can’t believe that was just a year ago!  A lot has happened since then!)

L thinks they’re beautiful too.

I think the kids loved being small enough to walk down the isles.

Maybe Paul enjoyed the Tulip Festival after all?!

We were impressed by E’s puddle jumping skills.

The kids loved the dandelions as well.

Do we have a future CIA agent on our hands?

20120430-140930.jpg

After the festival we stripped the kids down to their skivvies because they were so muddy!

We enjoyed lunch from a drive through BBQ stand and then grabbed dessert at the Snow Goose Produce stand.

Biggest ice cream cones we have EVER eaten!

I always enjoy spending time out in “the country.”
